The book describes a wide range of materials on various photodetectors from their basic physics to their technological applications. Also, it develops circuits for photodetectors and illustrates and evaluates them in a number of applications. A feature of the book is the recurring reference to the ultimate performances achievable within the physical limits, in particular noise. In addition to the corrections and improvements suggested by readers of the book or made by the author himself, the second edition of the book is an expanded revision of the first edition by adding new materials, such as SPAD and UTC, in order to keep up with the development in the field of photodetectors over the past years, and adding exercise problems in each chapter for readers of the book to practice.
